What is Zoom Fatigue?

Are you suffering from ‘zoom fatigue’?  This term is used to describe the exhaustion that comes with being on so many video conferences, whether it’s via Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Hangouts or Skype.  Participating in so many video calls is exhausting and zoom exhaustion is something that many of us are fighting now throughout this Covid-19 crisis.  Psychologists warn that zoom fatigue can even lead to burnout or depression.

 

Causes of Zoom Fatigue

So why is video conferencing so exhausting?  Firstly, it requires more focus than face to face meetings.  Our brain needs to make an extra effort to read non-verbal cues and body language which uses up a lot of energy and is extremely tiring.

Another reason zoom calls can be so exhausting is because people are more aware of what they look like and how they are coming across on camera.  Often our own video is on which puts us under pressure about our own appearance which can be an added stressor.

When WFH, the lines are often blurred between home and work seeing as they are now happening in the same space.  Throughout this crisis, zoom has been used by many both professionally and personally.  Zoom has been a great way to be able to connect with friends and family, however if you are participating in a lot of online meetings, connecting with family and friends online can add to this exhaustion.

 

3 Tips to Help Prevent Zoom Fatigue

  1. Stop looking at yourself

We’re not used to staring at ourselves all day long, this can put us under pressure and lead to feelings of anxiety.  It’s a good idea to turn off the self-view feature or turn off the camera where possible.

  1. Take regular breaks

Rather than having back to back meetings, try to schedule time in between online meetings.  Schedule regular breaks throughout the day and try to get away from your desk and move around.  Disconnect when you need to.

  1. Explore other options

Remember that there are still other ways of connecting.  Ask yourself is video conferencing always necessary?  Perhaps you can communicate the same message via email or by phone.

 

Zoom fatigue is manageable if you pay attention to your mind and body and follow the tips above.  Although online meetings can be exhausting, there are many benefits. I mean, when would we ever get away with wearing pyjama bottoms and slippers into the office!! ?
