Overcoming Procrastination

I am a small business owner which means I know only too well about the challenge of staying focused on a daily basis and holding myself accountable for my actions.  Having my own business is great in so many ways, I can choose my own hours and I love the fact that I am my own boss. I decide what work to take on and what tasks to work on each day.  The downside of this of course is that there’s nobody else to hold me accountable like a boss would if I worked for someone else.  This means that I’m more likely to carry out the tasks I enjoy and put off the ones I don’t enjoy so much!  Sound familiar?

Many of my clients come to me to gain more focus and clarity and stop getting in their own way!  Procrastination is a challenge that many of them are faced with.  I myself have my own professional coach to hold me accountable to help me to keep moving forward and achieve my goals.

What is Procrastination?

“Procrastination is the habit of delaying an important task, usually by focusing on less urgent, more enjoyable, and easier activities instead”

In other words, procrastination is when you choose to do something else instead of the task that you know you should be doing.  It can really stand in your way of achieving your goals and reaching your potential and can be a major stressor and can even lead to illness.

How to overcome procrastination

There are a range of strategies we can we can use to help us to stop procrastinating. Based on my own experiences and the work that I have done with many of my clients, I have developed a few tips to help you to overcome procrastination:

  1. Create a schedule
  2. Break down large tasks into smaller achievable tasks
  3. Prioritise your tasks – start with the hardest or the least pleasant task first
  4. Set deadlines for each task
  5. Minimise distractions
  6. Record your achievements

How I can help

As a life and career coach, I will work with you to identify what is getting in your way of achieving your goals, what is holding you back.  From there I will teach you the tools and strategies to overcome procrastination and I will hold you accountable each week for getting things done and reaching your goals.

What Others Are Saying

“Nicola helped me to get the confidence to set up my own business.  She helped me to figure out what I really wanted from my business and we worked together to explore ways of achieving this.  I quickly realised that lack of discipline was getting in my way of my own success and I found Nicola great at holding me accountable for agreed actions.  This has really helped me to stay focused and take my business to the next level” (Richard, Dublin)
